Understanding Tanzania's seasons is key to planning the perfect safari. Here's a detailed breakdown of what to expect throughout the year:
High Season (Jun-Oct): Peak wildlife viewing, dry weather, animals congregate around water sources. Best for river crossings and general game viewing. Higher prices and more tourists.
Mid Season (Nov-Feb): Short rains, green landscapes, calving season begins in December. Excellent bird watching and fewer tourists.
Low Season (Mar-May): Long rains, lush green scenery, lowest prices, fewest tourists. Some lodges close, but great for photography and those on a budget.
The best wildlife viewing is during the dry season (June to October) when animals congregate around water sources and vegetation is sparse. For the Great Migration, July to October offers river crossings, while January to March is best for calving season. The green season (November to May) offers beautiful landscapes, lower prices, and excellent bird watching.
Most visitors need a visa. You can obtain an e-visa online before travel (recommended) or a visa on arrival at major airports. The cost is typically $50-100 depending on nationality. Check with your local Tanzanian embassy for specific requirements.
Yellow fever vaccination is required if coming from endemic countries. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Polio. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your travel doctor at least 4-6 weeks before travel.
The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US Dollars are widely accepted at hotels, lodges, and tour operators. Credit cards are accepted in major establishments, but cash is needed for smaller purchases and tips. ATMs are available in cities and towns.
Lightweight clothing in neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive), warm layers for morning game drives, comfortable walking shoes, wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, camera with zoom lens, binoculars, and any personal medications. Avoid bright colors and blue/black which attract tsetse flies.
Yes, Tanzania is generally very safe for tourists. The safari areas are well-patrolled and tourist-focused. As with any travel, exercise normal precautions: don't walk alone at night in cities, keep valuables secure, and follow your guide's instructions in wildlife areas.
